Take a moment for Meso

Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that is preventable. It is caused by exposure to asbestos.

Why am I writing about this? Well, the answer is simple. Who wants cancer? Obviously the answer is nobody does! Now, why don’t we give ourselves several minutes of our lives to get to know one type of cancer that is preventable?

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of cells lining the body’s internal organs, known as the mesothelium. There are three recognized types of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease, accounting for roughly 70% of cases, and occurs in the lining of the lung known as the pleura. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the abdominal cavity, known as the peritoneum and pericardial mesothelioma originates in the pericardium, which lines the heart.

The thing about mesothelioma is that it has a long dormancy period and the person wouldn’t know he or she is sick until years or decades later. Most of the people exposed are our veterans (my great uncle who was in the navy). His lungs were weak through the years but it has only worsened the past several years because of his past asbestos exposure.

Someone is also at risk for second hand asbestos exposure if they wash the clothes of someone who was exposed to asbestos. Asbestos can be inhaled wherever there is asbestos obviously-be it at work or home. It is found in pipes, and such. Thankfully, It is now banned from most of the things and there are inspections being done to ensure that everyone complies but it is always better to get a heads up as there would always be those “people” who always find sneaky ways to not comply.

If you are a victim please know that there are mesothelioma lawyers whom you can turn to. Asbestos manufacturers know the dangers of their business and yet put people at risk. You also need to seek treatment and therapy and since this is expensive (chemotherapy, radiation, medicines), it is better if you are compensated by your company for what they knowingly put you through. Seek help early as the prognosis is oftentimes better at early detection.
